What does a tutor do that is different to a teacher? A tutor addresses an individual’s need and a teacher addresses the needs of a whole class. This is why remote tutoring works very well but remote teaching does not. A teacher needs to interact with the class whilst teaching and that is very difficult remotely whereas a tutor can achieve this easily one to one.

I am a recently retired teacher of chemistry at GCSE and A level, and I am an approved examiner. For the last 17 years I worked in a top independent school in the north east of England achieving many top grades at both GCSE and A level. During this time I also tutored students from other north east schools, in person and of course more recently, remotely using the latest technology available.
After leaving university with a PhD, I worked in R&D in industry for twenty years, rising to Technical Director. I then wanted a new challenge and so returned to university to re-train as a teacher, obtaining a PGCE and embarking on a second career with the added benefit of understanding the use of science in industry and being able to teach chemistry from a very practical standpoint.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching and the tutoring experience even more so. Getting to know my students so that I can deliver Chemistry tuition in a way which works for them, building their confidence and helping them to see their strengths. It’s a fantastic development journey for every learner and I know I help them get the grade they deserve.
